PacklistGood material is essential. Light, compact and effective are the key elements when it comes to finding the right material for the job. And of course your own personal taste.
At first you are in the habit of taken along too much stuff that appeared useless or is not used at all. I always make notes during my trips: what is convenient and appears to be practical, what needs to be improved, etc..
Basic survivalkit (two of the most important items) |
 | Espresso-maker for 3 cups:
Three Italian size cups equals one Dutch size mug. An aboslute must at breakfast and after dinner. Don't leave home without it, and this coffee tastes some much better than instant-coffee. |
 | Rearview-mirror:
A real life-saver (has proven its value on many occassions). |
The following list is based on my experience over the years and personal needs.
It will give you a general idea of the amount of material one needs to consider carrying along.

The above is regarded as the basic essentials what should be on board. All the rest,
like bread, meat and fresh vegetables, are purchased during the day. In France this means a visit to the Boulanger for some fress croissants and a baquette (I can hardly wait),
and at the end of the day, with a campingplace in sight, fress vegetables (tomatoes for that extra bit of power for the mussles) and a bit of meat.
Without a proper and well balanced meal you simply can not perform the next day. The body will take some beating, and one can only endure with the right amount fuel.
It sounds so easy, but I met a couple of cyclist many years ago who were quite surprised that they were unable to perform on a couple of ham and cheese sandwiches they had the day before. Idiots.

Spare tire | 1x Continental TravelContact |
Spare tire is a so-called fold-up model which is the same make and model as the regular tires on the bike, namely Continental TravelContact.
A tire which can easily take the beating for over 5000 km without problems and often without a puncture.
Mind you, it helps if you check the tires at the end of each day for possible glass and stone chippings. And of course keep the pressure as high as possible.
It will make cycling so much easier (less friction), and will also increase the overall life cycle of the tires.
