Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research Fund
(Bloodwise)

People of all ages develop leukaemia and the related cancers of the blood though generally speaking the older we are the greater the chance of the disease occurring. Leukaemia is a form of cancer and is caused by the uncontrolled growth of blood cells. This happens when the genes that govern cell life become damaged and no longer properly control cell growth and death. The older we become, the greater the chance of accumulated gene damage likely to spark cancer.

There are exceptions to this rule. A small number of children every year develop leukaemia, lymphoma and the related blood disorders. The incidence of a form of Hodgkin’s disease peaks in young adults. Cancer in the under 15s accounts for less than one per cent of all malignancies diagnosed each year in developed countries.

The LRF commits over £20 million annually to Universities, medical schools and teaching hospitals throughout the UK for research into cancers of the blood. Supporting doctors and scientists at hospitals and academic institutions throughout the country, the LRF funds a wide range of projects, from basic laboratory research to clinical trials with patients.

Why did I choose for the Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research Fund?

As non-UK member and owner of a Caterham Super Seven sportscar I am always surprised to read in Low Flying's (club's magazine) monthly issue how well the Caterham and Lotus 7 Club UK is doing with regard to raising money for a good cause such as the Leukaemia Research Fund. And yes, I bought in the past the occasional raffle-tickets, but after all these years I think it's now time as clubmember to do once again my bit for a good cause. Because I had done a couple of long-distance cycletrips in previous years I could do another variation on the Lands End - John O'Groat, but other members have already done that if I'm not mistaken

Caterham and Lotus 7 Club UK

When the idea came to do a bicycle return trip to the Mediterranean Sea in 2001 it seemed obvious to use the event for raising money for a good cause, because I felt it was time that I, as Dutch member of the Caterham and Lotus 7 Club UK (3500 members worldwide) for many years, made a serious contribution to club's main charity being the Leukaemia Reseach Fund. The 2001 trip raised a total of € 1400,- for the LRF which wasn't bad considering it was my first raising-money-for-a-good-cause attempt. With this in mind I decided in 2004 on doing something I had not done before: a really long distance cyclcetrip, and because I had done the first part of the Santiago de Compostela trip many years ago, it was time to complete the whole trip to Spain. Return trip came down to just over 5400 km, and raised a total of £ 2518.66 (= € 3635.75).

Would you like to contribute with either a fix amount of money or per kilometre? The Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research Fund needs your support and money to continue their good work.
